Embroidery can be as easy as stitching a line of contrasting thread on a fabric, to the exquisite reversible embroideries of the Chinese Imperial Courts. Embroidery can be done in threads from the finest silk to the coarsest twine, and on fabrics as fine as gauze and as heavy as canvas or leather.
Often times, embroidery will add that special touch that turns an ordinary project into a work of art. Embroidery can be added to almost any project such as: the bodice or hem of a dress, towels or robes, bed linens, quilt tops, throw pillows, curtains or valences, baby blankets, etc. One of my favorite embroidery projects has been making personalized Christmas stockings for friends and family. (There is something special about seeing your name embroidered with pretty thread on fun Christmas fabrics!) I have also enjoyed embellishing placemats and napkins with embroidery in holiday designs and giving them as gifts. You’re only limited to your imagination…
And possibly your sewing machine. Some sewing machines
have special embroidery capabilities that have pre-programmed
designs, and that also allow for you to program your own
designs (such as a name), and even the option of combining
the two for a truly unique and personal effect. These sewing
machines are generally more expensive than machines without
embroidery capabilities, but the extra cost is worth it
to have the endless options that embroidery affords you.
When special touches, like the names of those you love,
appear on a quilt or other project, you will see the sentimental
value of that gift rise in the eyes of those receiving
it.
